Pittsburgh Draft Needs: Steel City Dilemma

The NFL draft is right around the corner, and there are a lot of questions left unanswered in the Steel City. These questions range from positional Pittsburgh draft needs to how Omar Kahn will draft with a new coach, Mike McCarthy, the native “Man of Steel”.

How will the organization and fanbase react on April 23? I’m excited to find out. Let's dive into it!

Let's discuss the obvious question: who will the Steelers take as number one in the draft? They have been linked to many players, but the ones I think would fit best are the following.

Steelers Draft Needs

  • Makai Lemon USC (WR) : To me, Lemon should be the highest-rated wide receiver in this draft. His skill set and excellent footwork make him a great comparison to Amon-Ra St. Brown. He would fit perfectly in the Steelers receiver room alongside veteran receivers Michal Pittman Jr. and DK Metcalf. He could be a dual threat in the slot and

downfield; the only problem is that they would most likely have to move up in the draft.

  • Omar Cooper Jr. Indiana (WR) : I think Cooper embodies all the qualities you would want in a receiver. His NFL combine was good across the board, but the two areas I see he excels is are his hands and ability to make big-time plays. I think this is the best overall pick at the wide receiver position at the 21st pick.

  • Kaydyn Proctor Alabama (LT) : The past couple of drafts, Pittsburgh has focused heavily on offensive line, and it's starting to pay off. While they look stronger, there’s still a weakness on the left side of the line. With Isaac Seumalo leaving in free agency, and Broderick Jones not living up to what he was drafted to be (although he is only a junior,) I think he would be a nice fit.

These are three examples of players that fit the Pittsburgh draft needs and would improve the team immediately.

There is one player I believe would be a mistake, and that's Ty Simpson. I think he has the potential to be an NFL quarterback, but not as a starter. Rumors have circulated about Pittsburgh considering him in the first round, which seems illogical given that other quarterbacks in the draft are projected to go in the third round in many mock drafts. In my view, he is on par with them. Will Howard is available with an impressive resume and career highlights, including winning a national title and backing up Aaron Rodgers.

The next item on the menu for the Pittsburgher's is the drafting relationship between Omar Kahn and Mike McCarthy. I personally think they are a good fit together due to the excellent off-season moves in acquiring Michael Pittman Jr., Jamel Dean and Rico Dowdle.

With these two, I'm eagerly anticipating the next chapter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, popcorn in hand. A key factor influencing these decisions is Aaron Rodgers' upcoming decision on whether he'll make one last attempt. Time will reveal his choice, but I do know that Rodgers and McCarthy's relationship played a significant role in his selection as the next head coach. For now, all we can do is sit back and enjoy the journey... perhaps the final one.
